M&T Bank's quarterly profit rises on higher fee income

Oct 16 (Reuters) - M&T Bank MTB.N reported an increase in third-quarter profit on Thursday, supported by stronger fee income.

Shares of the Buffalo, New York-based bank were up about 1% in premarket trading. They have fallen about 2% so far in 2025.

Easing investor anxiety over U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies and growing expectations of interest rate cuts have buoyed the capital market. The benchmark S&P 500 index has gained about 8% during the three months ended September 30.

M&T Bank's total non-interest income rose to $752 million during the quarter, from $606 million a year earlier. Mortgage banking revenue climbed 36%.

The allowance for loan losses as a percentage of loans outstanding came in at 1.58% as of September 30, down from 1.61% as of June 30, reflecting lower levels of criticized commercial real estate loans, the bank said.

Criticized loans are those that are deemed to have an elevated level of credit risk.

M&T's net interest income, the difference between what banks pay customers on deposits and earn as interest on loans, rose to $1.76 billion from $1.73 billion a year earlier.

Net income available to common shareholders rose to $754 million, or $4.82 per share, from $674 million, or $4.02 per share, a year earlier.
