Unipol chairman says ex-Mediobanca CEO Nagel had no advisory role in Intesa-MPS deal

Unipol chairman says ex-Mediobanca CEO Nagel had no advisory role in Intesa-MPS deal

- The former CEO of Mediobanca did not have an advisory role for insurer Unipol UNPI.MI in the agreement it struck with Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI as part of the bank's bid for Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS), Unipol Chairman Carlo Cimbri said on Monday.

Italy's biggest banking group Intesa Sanpaolo made a €30.6 billion ($35 billion) unsolicited cash-and-share bid to buy smaller rival MPS BMPS.MI in Italy's biggest banking deal ever.

To address competition issues, Intesa struck a deal with Unipol to sell a banking business comprising 635 MPS branches and MPS' central offices in Siena, if its bid is successful.

Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Monday that Former Mediobanca CEO Alberto Nagel - who quit Mediobanca after MPS successfully bid for the investment bank - had an advisory role for Unipol.
