STOXX EDGES UP ON HEAVY EARNINGS DAY

European shares inched higher on Thursday on strong earnings and a surge in oil price lifting heavyweight energy stocks.

Top gainers on the STOXX 600 .STOXX index included Kering PRTP.PA, Nokia NOKIA.HE, LSEG LSEG.L, Rentokil RTO.L and Metso METSO.HE, all rising more than 5% following their latest updates. The region-wide index was last up 0.1%.

There were some weak spots, with French software company Dassault Systemes DAST.PA tumbling over 15% after a guidance cut, and Sodexo EXHO.PA down 9% on disappointing numbers.

A surge in oil prices lifted energy stocks .SXEP by 2%, making them the best sectoral gainer, while shares in airlines, some of the heaviest heavy fuel consumers, headed lower.
