VW unit MOIA begins US robotaxi rides with Orlando rollout (updated)

UPDATE 1-VW unit MOIA begins US robotaxi rides with Orlando rollout

Adds details

- Volkswagen's VOWG.DE MOIA America has rolled out robotaxis in Orlando's Lake Nona community together with autonomous mobility operator Beep, the companies said on Thursday, marking the subsidiary's first US passenger operations.

The rollout comes as companies such as Alphabet's GOOGL.O Waymo and Tesla TSLA.O expand robotaxi operations across the US, signaling a shift to commercial deployment of self-driving taxis from testing.

Here are more details:

  • The companies have invited passengers to request rides through the Beep mobile app and use dedicated pickup and drop-off locations along three Lake Nona routes.

  • The self-driving ID. Buzz vehicles are equipped with a system developed by Mobileye MBLY.O and will operate with human monitors onboard during this phase.

  • The integrated system is designed to help fleet operators deploy and manage autonomous transportation services.

  • Florida has been one of the most permissive US states for autonomous vehicle testing, allowing companies to operate self-driving cars on public roads without a human safety driver for years.

  • MOIA America is also conducting on-road testing and validation in Los Angeles and Austin before rolling out commercial operations there.
