Portugal's Mota-Engil wins $1.16 bln construction contracts in Mexico

LISBON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Portugal's largest construction company, Mota-Engil MOTA.LS, has won railway construction contracts in Mexico worth more than 1 billion euros ($1.16 million), increasing its order book in the country to 3.7 billion euros, it said on Monday.

"With these contracts, Mota-Engil resumes growth of its backlog in Mexico ... strengthening its position today as the largest European railway infrastructure constructor" in the country, it said in a statement.

Mota-Engil shares were up 2.3% in early trading on Monday after the announcement.

The largest contract it won from the Mexican government is worth 820 million euros and involves the design and construction of the second stretch of the railway between the Apaseo el Grande and Irapuato, with a total length of 70.7 kilometres (44 miles).

It had already been awarded the construction of the first 30 km stretch in August under Mexico's National Railway Plan.

The company, which operates in more than 20 countries in Africa, Europe, and Latin America, had a global order backlog of €14.7 billion in June.
