April 27 (Reuters) - Bed Bath & Beyond BBBY.N shares surged 34% in after-market trading on Monday, after the online retailer posted a quarterly sales beat on steady demand and reported a narrower loss on its cost-cutting efforts.
Net sales for the quarter rose 6.9% year-over-year to $248 million, beating estimates of $240 million, marking the company's first significant revenue growth in 19 quarters.
Adjusted loss per share of 25 cents compared with a loss of 42 cents a year earlier.
"Cost reduction is part of the strategy, and we will continue to eliminate duplicative and inefficient operating expenses. But the larger opportunity is revenue," CEO Marcus Lemonis said.
The company has simplified its structure by removing layers, consolidating operations and cutting jobs.
Bed Bath & Beyond, which bought the Container Store, Elfa and Closet Works earlier this year, said it expects to eliminate more than $60 million of costs in the next nine months.
The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2023, and some of its assets were bought by online retailer Overstock for about $21.5 million. Overstock later rebranded as Bed Bath & Beyond.
