COMPANIES
UNICREDIT CRDI.MI, BANCO BPM BAMI.MI
(*) UniCredit on Wednesday posted a much higher than expected quarterly profit and raised its 2025 outlook, a day after ditching a takeover bid for rival Banco BPM which had led Italy's second biggest bank to clash with the government.
Conference call on results due at 0800 GMT.
Unicredit on Tuesday announced it was withdrawing its 14.6 billion euro ($17 billion) all-share bid for Banco BPM, saying Italian government-imposed "golden power" conditions had derailed the deal.
UniCredit said a 30-day suspension of the bid which market watchdog Consob decided earlier on Tuesday was not sufficient to get to a point where all uncertainty around the scope of the government's powers would be cleared.
(*) BANCO BPM, ANIMA ANIM.MI, MONTE DEI PASCHI BMPS.MI
UniCredit's decision to withdraw its bid for Banco BPM could clear the way for Credit Agricole CAGR.PA to further increase its stake in BPM, several Italian newspapers reported on Wednesday. The French bank has already sought approval from the European Central Bank to raise its stake above 20%, and La Repubblica, citing a government source, said Italy's government would be in favour. Corriere della Sera reported that alternative strategies for Credit Agricole could include acquiring asset manager Anima, controlled by BPM, or about 100 of the bank's branches.
Corriere also said that after Unicredit's withdrawal BPM could consider an offer for Monte dei Paschi di Siena BPS.MI, although not in the immediate future.
(*) STELLANTIS STLAM.MI
