ONLY CONSUMER STAPLES REWARD SHORT SELLERS AS TECH, MINING RALLIES BITE

Short sellers have only profited from the most crowded names in the consumer staples sector so far in 2025, data by analytics firm S3 Partners showed on Wednesday.

Only the most heavily shorted names in this traditionally defensive group delivered negative returns, rewarding bearish bets amid broader market strength, the firm said.

B&G Foods BGS.N and Westrock Coffee WEST.O, were among the top contributors, S3 Partners said. These stocks have shed over 30% each year-to-date in 2025, as per LSEG data.

Conversely, technology shares and miners punished short trades the most as the artificial intelligence frenzy and the euphoria around critical minerals drove losses for short sellers, said S3 Partners.

Rigetti Computing RGTI.O and Applied Digital APLD.O were the largest contributors to losses for tech shorts. These stocks have more than doubled in market value in 2025.

Among miners, United States Antimony UAMY.A, TMC the metals company TMC.O and MP Materials MP.N have been the biggest contributors to losses, as per the firm. These stocks are up over 400%, 600% and 300% respectively this year.
