Polish Development Fund could support SMR projects in Poland and abroad
Polish Development Fund could support SMR projects in Poland and abroad WARSAW, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The Polish Development Fund (PFR) could support investments in small modular nuclear reactors across Poland as well as local company Synthos Green Energy's (SGE) projects abroad, the fund's Chief Executive Officer Mikolaj Raczynski said on Wednesday.
Poland is planning to build its first nuclear power plant to cut its reliance on coal, while there are also plans to invest in small modular nuclear reactors (SMR).
Last week, SGE, which holds the rights to GE Vernova Hitachi's SMR technology in central Europe, said it reached a deal with Orlen PKN.WA on a joint SMR project in Wloclawek, Poland.
Raczynski said PFR was not needed for construction of the Wloclawek plant, but that the SMR project had always envisaged multiple sites, where the fund could potentially play a role.
SGE also plans to build a fleet of 14 SMRs in Britain at a total cost of £35 billion ($46 billion) and has initial agreements to deploy SMRs in Hungary and Slovakia.
Raczynski also said PFR was open to different scenarios when asked whether PFR would be interested only in joining the Polish part of the project and not SGE as a whole.($1 = 0.7567 pounds)
