German auto industry body warns further 125,000 jobs at risk by 2035

BERLIN, May 13 (Reuters) - Germany's VDA auto industry association warned on Wednesday that a further 125,000 jobs could be lost in the country's car sector by 2035, taking the total decline since 2019 to about 225,000, unless the EU becomes more technology-open and improves Germany's competitiveness.

VDA said current EU CO2 fleet rules for cars and vans, allowing only battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles to be newly registered from 2035, endanger 50,000 jobs in Germany. A broader mix of plug-in hybrids, range extenders and combustion engines with renewable fuels could save these positions, according to the VDA.
