(*) POLITICS

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday she was amazed by comments from French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou accusing Italy of unfair tax competition due to its special low-tax regime for high earners. The exchange renews tensions between the two countries, after Paris summoned the Italian ambassador last month over comments by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini regarding French President Emmanuel Macron.

BANKS

Italy's ruling coalition is at odds over the idea of including some form of tax on banks in the 2026 budget. Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right League, proposing last week that banks should "make a contribution" to enable budget tax cuts for middle-earners and companies.

Antonio Tajani, leader of the centrist Forza Italia, told daily MilanoFinanza on Saturday that banks were already taxed sufficiently and any extra burden on them would only be passed on as higher costs for their customers.

The form of any potential bank levy remains vague as parties negotiate ahead of the budget's presentation in the autumn.

ENERGY

The government is working on measures to reduce the cost of natural gas and electricity for companies, to approve in a decree in September or October, daily Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday.

The government wants to reduce the gap between the average wholesale gas price in Italy and that in its European partners, the newspaper wrote. One approach under review is imposing a cap on the price of electricity produced by hydroelectric plants, it said.
