Prudential taps Douglas Flint to succeed Shriti Vadera as chair (updated)

Updates with background in paragraph 5, further details in paragraph 6

Jan 14 (Reuters) - British insurer Prudential PRU.L, 2378.HK named Douglas Flint as its new chair on Wednesday, succeeding Shriti Vadera, who is stepping down in May after five years in the role.

Flint has been chairing Aberdeen Group Plc since January 2019. Earlier, he spent over two decades at HSBC HSBA.L, including a stint as Group Chair from 2010 until 2017.

Meanwhile, Vadera, a former UK Labour business minister and ex-chair of Santander UK, led Prudential through a strategic transition that included the group's pivot towards its Asia and Africa businesses.

Although Prudential remains listed in London, the insurer has had little meaningful presence in the UK since spinning off M&G Investments in 2019.

Earlier in the month, the firm announced the launch of a $1.2 billion share buyback to be completed by December.

Flint is expected to join the board in March once regulatory approvals are in place and will help with handover before Vadera's departure, Prudential added in its statement.
