POLITICS

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government is increasingly unpopular among young voters, opinion polls show, a trend that could prove costly ahead of a national election due next year.

Since taking office in 2022, Meloni has done little on the economic front to increase opportunities for the young, analysts say, while passing a raft of law-and-order measures that often disproportionately affect them.

According to a Reuters exclusive, the ECB is leaning toward approving the takeover of Commerzbank CBKG.DE. An internal document on its preliminary assessment of the transaction shows that the European authority has identified no "reasons to oppose" the deal, although it believes the integration process will be "complex and lengthy."

German supervisors are calling for a "mitigation strategy" to rebuild consensus within the German bank after the hostile takeover, as well as a strengthening of the Italian group's internal checks and balances.

SAIPEM SPMI.MI

Saipem said it had been awarded an offshore EPCI contract in the Middle East, valued at approximately $1.8 billion.

The utility group also said it had signed a Limited Notice to Proceed with Sonatrach for the implementation of Phase 1 of the "Phosphates Intégré" project in Algeria, valued at approximately €500 million.

PRYSMIAN PRY.MI

The cable maker will invest over $1 billion in three U.S. production sites, located in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, to strengthen its manufacturing capacity in the North American market.

Stakes recently built by Mediobanca and JPMorgan hedge derivative contracts entered into by CDP to support its plan to raise its stake in the payments group to 29.9%, Italian financial daily MF reported on Thursday.
