Poland's top insurer PZU tops second-quarter profit expectations (updated)
UPDATE 1-Poland's top insurer PZU tops second-quarter profit expectations Adds chart illustrating insurance operating profit development compared to Q2 2025. Updates with result details in paragraphs 3-7.
Aug 20 (Reuters) - Poland's top insurer PZU PZU.WA reported a second-quarter profit that topped market expectations on Thursday, helped by strength in its mass property and casualty and individual life insurance businesses.
Quarterly net profit rose 12% from a year ago to 1.65 billion zlotys ($446 million), compared with analysts' average forecast of 1.52 billion zlotys in a company-compiled consensus.
Operating profit from PZU's insurance services jumped 27.5% to 1.15 billion zlotys in the same period, driven by strong non-life margins and favourable mortality trends. Net financial income allocated to insurance added 349 million zlotys.
The Polish motor insurance market has seen a return of competitive pricing pressure, PZU said. Price hikes for third-party liability policies have been insufficient to offset claims inflation, hurting sector profitability.
Despite these pressures, the company said it held a 29.2% share of the domestic non-life market in the first quarter, the latest period with available regulatory data.
The net profit contribution from PZU's banking segment, which includes a 20% stake in Pekao PEO.WA and a 32% stake in Alior Bank ALRR.WA, dropped 19% to 426 million zlotys, pressured by a higher corporate tax rate for banks and lower net interest income, and despite lower legal provisions.
