Updates for RBI's monetary policy decision

By Bharath Rajeswaran and Vivek Kumar M

- Indian shares held onto modest gains on Friday after the central bank kept the key policy rate on hold and maintained a "neutral" stance, despite a falling currency.

Investors are on the lookout for signals from the Reserve Bank of India governor's address on measures to tackle weakness in the rupee and inflationary pressures from elevated energy prices.

The RBI kept the key interest rate unchanged at 5.25%.

The benchmark Nifty 50 .NSEI was up 0.18% at 23,459.4, while the BSE Sensex .BSESN gained 0.2% to 74,514.76, as of 10:06 a.m. IST, clinging on to the marginal gains logged ahead of the decision.

Twelve of 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps .NIFSMCP100 and mid-caps .NIFMDCP100 rose 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively.

Rate-sensitive financials .NIFTYFIN, realty .NIFTYREAL gained 1.2% and 1.4%, after the RBI rate pause.
