India's RBL Bank quarterly profit nearly triples on higher loan growth

India's RBL Bank quarterly profit nearly triples on higher loan growth

- India's RBL Bank RATB.NS reported a near-threefold rise in second-quarter profit on Monday, helped by higher loan growth, while inflows from foreign currency deposits raised under a special central bank scheme bolstered its funding base.

  • The lender, majority-owned by Dubai's Emirates NBD ENBD.DU, posted a standalone net profit of 4.82 billion rupees ($50.33 million) for the quarter ended September 30, up from 1.79 billion rupees a year earlier.

  • Its net interest income, the difference between interest earned on loans and paid on deposits, rose 37% to 21.31 billion rupees.

  • Net advances grew 42% year-on-year, while deposits rose 34%, boosted by foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits raised under the Reserve Bank of India's special scheme.

  • Indian lenders saw strong loan growth during the quarter across both corporate and retail segments, with lending against FCNR deposits also contributing to growth.

  • In June, the RBI introduced measures, including concessional hedging facilities and swap arrangements, to attract foreign currency deposits.

  • Indian banks raised nearly $133 billion in FCNR(B) deposits under the scheme and were allowed to extend loans against these deposits.

  • "We successfully enhanced our funding profile through significant FCNR deposit mobilisation, creating additional flexibility to support future growth," RBL Managing Director and CEO R Subramaniakumar said.

  • Asset quality improved, with gross bad loans as a percentage of total loans dropping to 1.02% as of end-September from 1.30% three months earlier.

  • Net interest margin expanded to 4.61% from 4.13% in the preceding quarter and 4.51% a year earlier.
