Iberdrola says watchdog not linking its plant anomalies to blackout causes

MADRID, April 20 (Reuters) - Spain's energy and antitrust watchdog CNMC observed anomalous behaviours at several of Iberdrola's IBE.MC power plants, but did not directly link them to last year's unprecedented blackout, the company's CEO for Spain said on Monday.

The CNMC announced last Friday it was launching probes into major energy companies, including Iberdrola, over the massive outage, which plunged large parts of Spain and Portugal into darkness for up to 16 hours on April 28, 2025.

In what was Iberdrola's first reaction to the CNMC's probe for "serious infringements", Mario Ruiz-Tagle also told a parliamentary inquiry that once Iberdrola received more information from the CNMC, "we will be able to know what we're accused of and defend ourselves".
