March 9 (Reuters) - A jury in San Antonio, Texas, said late on Friday that Rocket Companies RKT.N subsidiary Rocket Close stole trade secrets from real estate data platform HouseCanary and awarded $175 million in damages.
The verdict followed a retrial in the 10-year-old case, which involved allegations that Rocket Close stole technology from HouseCanary related to valuing home prices. Rocket Close provides title insurance services and rebranded from Amrock last year.
A Texas appeals court in 2020 threw out an earlier $700 million verdict against Amrock in the case.
"While disappointing, the dramatic reduction in award demonstrates how inflated HouseCanary’s claims have always been," Rocket Close said in a statement. "We are confident this verdict will be overturned on appeal, just as it was before."
HouseCanary attorney Max Tribble of Susman Godfrey said he was "extremely grateful that a jury has once again found HouseCanary developed valuable trade secrets that were stolen and misused by Amrock."
