Generic drugmaker Sandoz files anti-dumping complaint about Chinese antibiotics imports

- Swiss generic drugmaker Sandoz SDZ.S filed a draft anti-dumping complaint with the European Commission over Chinese imports of the antibiotic ingredient amoxicillin, part of the penicillin family, the company said on Thursday.

  • Sandoz says it has the only major remaining vertically integrated production network for penicillins in Europe.

  • Sandoz says Chinese market-distorting behaviours include sustained below-cost pricing, state subsidies and concentration of global capacity in China.

  • Chief Executive Richard Saynor said Europe risks losing antibiotic manufacturing capacity, saying that up to 90% of global antibiotic active ingredients are now produced outside Europe.

  • "Safeguarding antibiotic supply is not only a health policy issue, but a question of economic security and strategic trade policy. Europe must act now to safeguard independent supply in years to come," Saynor said in the statement.
