U.S. stock indexes struggled for direction amid choppy trading on Friday, but
remained on track for weekly gains as markets juggled conflicting economic data
and looked ahead to a central bank meeting next week for clues on the monetary
policy outlook.  .N 
    
    At 13:33 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  .DJI  was up 0.22% at
38,971.16. The S&P 500  .SPX  was up 0.29% at 5,368.6 and the Nasdaq Composite
 .IXIC  was up 0.20% at 17,207.637.
