Singtel to launch local operations in Brazil

By Alberto Alerigi

SAO PAULO, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Singapore Telecommunications STEL.SI announced on Tuesday it will launch local operations in Brazil, saying it seeks to serve the domestic corporate market and to connect multinational firms between the Latin American country and Asia.

The move marks Singtel's first local operations in Latin America.

The firm said it expects to have its Sao Paulo office ready by the third quarter of 2026.

Singtel has not disclosed any investment plans or growth targets in Brazil.

The initial focus will be on launching services such as SD-WAN, multi-cloud connectivity, and 5G services, Chief Executive Tian Chong Ng said.

KEY QUOTES

"Brazil is at a digital turning point," Ng said in written responses to questions from Reuters.

"The adoption of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and automation by companies is accelerating," Ng added.

"Brazil's economy has shown resilience amid global uncertainty and continues to grow in sectors aligned with our capabilities," he said, citing fintechs.

CONTEXT

In Brazil, Singtel is likely to face competition from groups such as Telefonica Brasil VIVT3.SA, America Movil's AMXB.MX Claro, and Datora Telecom.

Brazil is part of the Mercosur bloc, which signed a free trade agreement in 2023 with Singapore.

The trade agreement is still in the process of being internalized, according to data from Brazil's Foreign Ministry.
