MEME STOCK FEVER FADES AS RETAIL SHIFTS TO BIG TECH
Retail investors are cooling on meme stocks after a brief frenzy earlier this month, according to Vanda Research.
Trading volumes in names like AMC Entertainment AMC.N and Gamestop GME.N have dropped by as much as 90% week-on-week, with SoFi SOFI.O the lone outlier following a stock offering.
Instead, attention is turning to Big Tech earnings, with Meta META.O, Microsoft MSFT.O, Apple AAPL.O and Amazon AMZN.O all reporting this week. Retail flows into "MAG7+" names have rebounded and stabilised.
That suggests that "while meme stock flows made headlines, they didn't ignite the kind of broad-based retail frenzy we saw during the original GME episode in 2021 or other broad small-cap squeezes", writes Marco Iachini at Vanda Research.
