AEROSPACE, MINERS AND CONSTRUCTION ARE THE HORMUZ REOPENING PLAYS
There have been enough false rallies on hopes that the Strait of Hormuz is on the cusp of reopening in the past few months that analysts can get a decent sense of which names could do well if/when it eventually does.
We could even be into self-fulfilling prophecy territory as, if everyone can do the same analysis, maybe everyone ends up buying the names that normally go up.
Morgan Stanley have had a go, and made a list of "What to Buy (in Europe) if the Strait Reopens" which combines inverse oil correlations, inverse bund yield correlations, and earlier false start deal moves.
The top five are: Rolls-Royce RR.L, ArcelorMittal MT.AS AntofagastaANTO.L , Safran SAF.PA and Societe Generale. SOGN.PA
They also shake it up a little bit by adding another screen that gives 1/3 weighting to those that show oversold technicals and so are exposed to a short term squeeze, and there we get some construction names entering the list.
That top five are: MTU Aero Engines MTXGn.DE , Barratt Redrow BTRW.L , Buzzi BZU.MI, Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SGOB.PA and Ryanair RYA.I.
Another thing they mention is how narrow the recent gains in European stocks have been. The percentage of stocks that have outperformed the market in the last month is in the high 30s at its lowest since October 2025.
