The perpetrators used the quiet Christmas period to drill their way into the vault of a Sparkasse bank in the city of Gelsenkirchen and then broke into several thousand safe deposit boxes, police said. Most shops and banks in Germany closed starting on December 24 for the Christmas period. Police only discovered the hole after a fire alarm went off on Monday. Outside the branch, angry customers said they weren’t getting any information and that they wanted to know which safe deposit boxes were affected. This customer said his box contained retirement savings. This one said his held lots of money and jewelry. A Sparkasse Bank spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Police said witnesses have reported that they saw several men on Saturday night carrying large bags in the stairwell of an adjacent parking garage.
