Thousands of IndiGo passengers were stranded by flight cancellations again on Thursday. A trade body said India’s largest airline wasn’t able to make timely roster changes and plan its schedule properly in relation to new government rules aimed at improving safety. At least 175 of the airline’s flights were canceled as of early Thursday. The new rules were announced last year and went into effect on November 1. It wasn’t immediately clear why IndiGo took such a big impact this week, but the airline has said stricter flight duty time limits have been a factor in the cancellations. Rival carriers like Air India and SpiceJet haven’t had to cancel flights. The new rules have raised the amount of mandatory rest per week for pilots by 48 hours, that took 12 hours from before. Pilots are also now only allowed to make two night-time landings per week, down from six under the old rules. Government sources said officials from Indian regulators are due to meet IndiGo senior management later Thursday. They will reportedly ask for details about what has led to the crisis and if there is a recovery plan in place. The regulator didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
