Italy - Factors to watch on April 23

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Thursday.

ECONOMY

Italy's government on Wednesday cut the country's economic growth outlook and hiked forecasts for the budget deficit and public debt, reflecting surging energy prices and turmoil in the Middle East.

DEBT

Treasury announces sale of 6-month BOT bills, with relative amounts to be auctioned on April 28.

COMPANIES

UNICREDIT CRDI.MI

Italy would be against any decision by UniCredit to move its headquarters or other key offices to Germany as part of a takeover of Commerzbank, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Wednesday.

Cesare Bisoni - part of the slate of candidates that won the majority of the votes at last week's shareholder meeting - is expected to be appointed as the lender's new chairman at Thursday's board meeting, several newspapers reported, indicating that negotiations between backers of returning CEO Luigi Lovaglio and his opponents had failed. The challenging shareholders, which lost out on a bid to elect Fabrizio Palermo as CEO, had pushed to appoint their own candidate for the chairmanship.

The first part of 2026 started positively for the insurer despite a complex geopolitical backdrop, Chairman Andrea Sironi told daily Corriere della Sera in an interview published on Thursday. Asked about the impact of governance changes at MPS, which through Mediobanca MDBI.MI now holds 13% of Generali, Sironi said he did not expect "any short‑term changes", and that he fully respects all shareholders.

The financial conglomerate is preparing to launch a tender among Italian and European banks to finance up to 2.85 billion euros of the cash component of its public exchange offer for TIM, daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Thursday. After several informal expressions of interest, CEO Matteo Del Fante is set to send out a request for proposals to select around 10 lenders, with loan sizes of about 300 million euros per bank, the paper added.

Italy's competition authority is expected to open an investigation into the preliminary deal on network sharing between TIM and Swisscom's SCMN.S Italian unit Fastweb to speed up the roll out of 5G infrastructure, newspaper MF reported on Thursday. The deal was announced in January.

STMICROELECTRONICS STMMI.MI

(*) The Franco-Italian chipmaker on Thursday reported first-quarter results above estimates, pointing to signs of recovery in its key semiconductor markets, and forecast further growth in the second quarter.

A conference call is scheduled for 0730 GMT.

The Rome-based team reached the Coppa Italia final as goalkeeper Edoardo Motta saved four penalties to secure a 2-1 shootout victory over Atalanta after a 1-1 draw in Bergamo on Wednesday left the tie level at 3-3 on aggregate.

(*) STELLANTIS STLAM.MI

Strong sales of electric vehicles more than offset diminishing sales of petrol and diesel cars in March, pushing up new car sales in Europe as Tesla extended a comeback, official data showed on Thursday.

Overall car registrations, a proxy for sales, in the European Union, Britain and the European Free Trade Association were up 11.1% to 1,581,169 vehicles sold in the month, according to the European auto lobby ACEA. Stellantis sales were up 6% in the period.

Banca CF+ said on Wednesday that Italian market regulator Consob had resumed, after a suspension, its review of its takeover bid on Banca Sistema, and that this would run until May 11.

The bank is preparing an asset securitisation deal worth up to 1 billion euros to comply with demands from the Bank of Italy, MF daily reported on Thursday. The central bank last month appointed two extraordinary commissioners to support BFF's restructuring efforts.
