POLITICS
Italy needs to tap the European Union's SAFE fund to boost its military budget, the defence minister said on Wednesday, despite his government's warning that it could drop the scheme unless Brussels eases budget rules on energy spending.
DEBT
Italy's Treasury said on Wednesday it would offer a new inflation-linked BTP bond dedicated exclusively to retail investors.
The issue, named "BTP Italia Sì", will have a 5-year maturity and will be offered from June 15-19. It will pay a premium over the domestic inflation rate.
ECONOMY
(*) Italy's heavy reliance on imported gas and slow progress on renewables are keeping electricity costs among the highest globally, as Meloni's government delays frustrate investors and risk undermining energy security.
(*) The European Commission thinks that Europe can reduce natural gas consumption by 15 billion cubic metres this year, Ruud Kempener, deputy head of unit for energy security and safety of DG Energy at the European Commission, said on Wednesday.

Italy's largest insurer posted on Thursday first-quarter results above expectations and confirmed its targets to 2027, including annual growth in earnings per share of between 8% and 10%. A conference call will follow at 1000 GMT.

A shortlist of four bidders for the sale of the group's biomethane unit, Bioenerys, which has an estimated value of around 500 million euros according to market estimates, is expected to be finalised this week, financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Thursday. It added that a consortium between Verdalia - a European biomethane platform backed by Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners - and Italy's Ludoil is seen as the frontrunner, followed by Edison EDNn.MI and A2A A2.MI.
