June 18 (Reuters) - Finnish forestry group Stora Enso STERV.HE is initiating a strategic review of its Swedish forest assets, including a potential separation and public listing of the assets through a partial demerger, it said on Wednesday.
The partial demerger into a new company would be wholly owned by all Stora Enso shareholders and will form two separate entities.
The company will retain ownership of over 1.2 million hectares in Sweden, including 1 million hectares of productive forestland, valued at approximately 5.8 billion euros ($6.68 billion) as of March 31.
In May, the company sold 12.4% of its Swedish forest assets for about $1 billion in a move to reduce debt and strengthen its balance sheet.
"Initiating this strategic review underscores our commitment to maximising shareholder value while ensuring alignment with our long-term strategic objectives," President and CEO of Stora Enso Hans Sohlström said.
