COMPANIES
MONTE DEI PASCHI BMPS.MI, BANCO BPM BAMI.MI, BANCA GENERALI BGN.MI
Italy's Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) shares closed down 1.3% on Friday after launching twin all-share exchange offers for rival Banco BPM and asset manager Banca Generali to counter a hostile takeover bid from Intesa Sanpaolo.
CEO Luigi Lovaglio will soon begin a roadshow to present and explain his strategy to investors, with meetings with funds in the United States scheduled for early next month, Il Corriere della Sera said on Sunday.
BANCO BPM BAMI.MI
Banco BPM's board will meet on Tuesday after MPS launched its bid for the lender, a source close to the matter said on Sunday.
If the MPS bid succeeds, the Tuscan bank could sell some of Banco BPM's assets, particularly branches, to Banco BPM's main investor, France's Credit Agricole CAGR.PA, several Italian newspapers reported on Saturday. The move would also help reduce Credit Agricole's stake in the new combined banking group, Il Sole 24 Ore said.
BANCA GENERALI BGN.MI
The wealth manager is assessing the terms of MPS' offer, which "was neither solicited nor agreed in advance," the company said in a statement after holding a board meeting on Friday.
Italian insurer Generali, which controls a 50.1% stake in Banca Generali, does not oppose in principle the bid MPS launched for Banca Generali and will assess it carefully and without prejudice, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The newspaper cited potential buyers as being the country's two largest banks Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit.
