Wall Street's main stock indexes struggled for direction on Thursday as
investors favored rate-sensitive small-cap stocks over expensive megacaps after
a softer-than-expected inflation reading bolstered hopes for monetary policy
easing in September.  .N 
    
    At 11:50 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  .DJI  was up 0.23% at
39,812.83. The S&P 500  .SPX  was down 0.76% at 5,591.19 and the Nasdaq
Composite  .IXIC  was down 1.66% at 18,338.425.
