Italy - Factors to watch on January 27

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Tuesday.

POLITICS

Italy will ask European Union partners this week to place Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) on the EU's terrorist register, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday, signalling a shift in Rome's position.

(*) Tajani said he had instructed that staff at the Tehran embassy be substantially reduced, with personnel returning to Italy very quickly.

ECONOMY

Italy's government on Monday declared a state of emergency for southern regions battered by a violent storm last week, pledging swift financial aid to rebuild roads and businesses hit by the severe weather.

Treasury sells 2.5-3.0 billion euros new 2.20% BTP Short bonds due February 28, 2028; 0.75-1.0 billion euros 1.10% BTPei bonds due August 15, 2031; 0.75-1.0 billion euros 2.55% BTPei bonds due May 15, 2056. Subscriptions close at 1000 GMT.

COMPANIES

MPS' board is considering, among several options, reducing its stake in Mediobanca to 51% from the current 86%, La Stampa daily reported on Tuesday. MPS could earn up to 4.8 billion euros from the sale, the paper added.

PIRELLI PIRC.MI

The Italian tyre maker's Chinese shareholder Sinochem said on Monday it had put forward a "structured solution" to end a governance spat with the Italian investor Camfin.

(*) Sinochem proposed spinning off Pirelli's cyber tyre operations in a new entity in which the Chinese investor would have no stake, several Italian newspapers reported on Tuesday. Camfin rejected the proposal saying that it did not address  concerns related to U.S. regulatory requirements, the papers said.

(*) The Italian government will discuss Pirelli's governance issues as early as this week, MF daily reported.

ENI ENI.MI

An international consortium developing the Karachaganak field has lost an arbitration case brought by Kazakhstan's government, leaving them liable to pay as much as $4 billion in compensation, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. The oil project is operated by a consortium led by Eni and Shell SHEL.L.

The Franco-Italian automaker's sales in the EU, Britain and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) rose 4.5% in December, ACEA data showed on Tuesday. The overall market rose by 7.6% to 1.2 million cars.

Italy's second-largest bank is expected to receive up to 380 million euros in dividends from its stake in German lender Commerzbank CBKG.DE in May, MF reported on Tuesday citing analysts' estimates.

Morgan Stanley has resumed coverage with an 'overweight' rating and a target price of 95 euros.

Italy's deposits protection fund (FITD) approved a 750 million euro bailout plan for the Oaktree-owned Banca Progetto, several Italian newspapers reported on Tuesday. Under the plan Italian lenders Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI, UniCredit CRDI.MI, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI, Banco BPM BAMI.MI, and BPER EMII.MI will hold 91% of Banca Progetto, Il Sole 24 Ore daily said.

The Italian asset manager said on Monday it had appointed Saverio Perissinotto as new chief executive, effective February 2.
