SEOUL, April 13 (Reuters) - South Korean low-cost carrier T'way Air 091810.KS plans to furlough some of its cabin crew without pay in May and June as part of its emergency management due to the fallout of the conflict in the Middle East, Joongang Ilbo daily reported on Monday.
T'way is the first among South Korean full-service and low-cost carriers to reduce staffing amid soaring fuel prices following the Iran war and the Korean won's record low exchange rate against the dollar.
The decision is to staff "cabin crew members more flexibly in line with changes in flight operating schedule," Joongang Ilbo quoted a T'way official as saying.
The furlough is temporary and will only involve employees who volunteer to take part, the official said.
Some South Korean carriers including Korean Air 003490.KS have shifted to emergency management as fuel surcharges jumped, driving up fares especially for long-haul flights.
T'way officials could not be contacted for comment and the airline did not immediately reply to an emailed query.
