** Shares of drug developer Tvardi Therapeutics TVRD.O fall 88.6% to $4.73 premarket
** Company says its experimental drug, TTI-101, failed to meet goals in a mid-stage trial on patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic and progressive lung disease
** The trial evaluated TTI-101 as a standalone treatment or in combination with Germany-based Boehringer Ingelheim's nintedanib in 88 patients
** Nintedanib is FDA approved, used to slow lung function decline in patients with IPF and other lung diseases
** Trial had high discontinuation rates in treatment arms — 56.7% for the 400 mg dose and 62.1% for 800 mg dose — compared with 10.3% in placebo
** Most discontinuations were due to gastrointestinal side effects, particularly among patients also receiving nintedanib - TVRD
** Company adds early results showed lung function improvements on the drug were similar to placebo
** As of last close, stock has more than doubled YTD
