What to Watch in the Day Ahead - Thursday, April 16

Streaming giant Netflix is expected to report a rise in first-quarter revenue, boosted by income from advertising. The company has been focusing on scaling its ad business and content offerings after merger talks with Warner Bros ended.

PepsiCo is expected to post a rise in first-quarter revenue, helped by resilient demand for its low-sugar beverages in the U.S. and sodas in international markets. Investors will look for commentary on impact of rising economic uncertainty on consumer sentiment, impact of weight-loss drugs on demand, pricing actions as well as annual forecasts.

On the U.S. economic front, the Labor Department will release its weekly jobless claims report. Initial jobless claims are expected to fall by 4,000 to 215,000 for the week ended April 11. Continued jobless claims, however, likely rose to 1.810 million from 1.794 million for the week ended April 4. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve is expected to report that industrial production rose 0.1% in March, following a 0.2% gain in February.

The Senate Banking Committee is set to hold a hearing on the nomination of Kevin Warsh to be next Federal Reserve chair.

New York Fed President John Williams is due to deliver the keynote address at the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York's FHLBNY 2026 Member Symposium. (0835/1235) Later in the day, Federal Reserve Board Governor Stephen Miran is set to participate in conversation before the Washington Economic Festival: "Global Macro Sessions" in Washington. Abbott Laboratories is expected to report its first-quarter results. Investor focus will be on the performance of its cardiovascular and glucose monitoring devices, along with any changes to its 2026 forecast print.

Bank of New York Mellon is expected to post a rise in first-quarter profit and revenue, helped by a surge in fees and commissions. Investors will look for commentary on the outlook for markets and the economy.

U.S. Bancorp is expected to report a higher first-quarter profit. Investors will parse management's commentary on the economy and the progress in the turnaround plan.

Insurance broker Marsh is expected to report higher first-quarter profit as insurance demand remains resilient.

Property and casualty insurance giant Travelers is expected to report a rise in first-quarter profit, helped by robust underwriting gains and a favorable comparison from the previous year, when results were hit by severe catastrophe losses from the Los Angeles wildfires.

Citizens Financial is expected to report a surge in first-quarter profit, on a boost from higher interest income and a rebound in deal advisory fees.

In Latin America, Brazil's IBC-BR economic activity index for February likely rose 0.47% after having risen 0.80% in January.
