US Cash Grains-Corn basis flat at elevators, merchants assess weather

US Cash Grains-Corn basis flat at elevators, merchants assess weather

- Spot basis bids were steady for corn at grain elevators in the U.S. Midwest and mixed at river terminals on Friday as farmers and merchants assessed the impact of weather on yield potential.

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture is scheduled to update its corn and soybean production estimates in a monthly report on Wednesday.

  • The agency is expected to trim its corn yield estimate to 182.4 bushels per acre from 183 bushels in July and its soybean yield estimate to 52.9 bushels per acre from 53 bushels last month, according to a Reuters survey of analysts.

  • Hot, dry weather likely hurt corn yield prospects in July, the key month for development of the crop, analysts said. However, weather forecasts pose limited risks for soybeans into mid-August, the key month for determining the size of the soy crop, an analyst said.

  • More rain is expected along with near-normal temperatures, forecaster Vaisala said in a note.

  • Grain merchants said they will also assess the USDA's estimates for crop acreage on Wednesday.

  • On Monday, the agency is slated to issue a weekly update on corn and soybean crop condition ratings.
