US Cash Grains-Corn, soybean basis mostly steady-firm on slow farmer sales
US Cash Grains-Corn, soybean basis mostly steady-firm on slow farmer sales CHICAGO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Spot basis bids for corn and soybeans were mostly steady to firm at U.S. Midwest processing plants and interior elevators on Monday and flat to lower at barge-loading river terminals, grain merchants said.
Farmer sales of both crops were limited on Monday as futures prices hovered near multi-week lows. Higher prices last month had triggered active sales, and many growers are waiting for prices to improve before booking fresh sales to elevators and processors.
More soybean elevators and processors rolled their spot basis bids to the Chicago Board of Trade November contract SX26 from the August contract SQ26. The roll resulted in higher cash bids at some locations as the November contract was at a 23-1/2 cent premium to August futures as of the close on Monday.
Crop-stressing weather last month has raised concerns about yield prospects, particularly for corn, merchants said. Rains are expected across the Midwest this week, although some crops have likely already sustained damage, they said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture cut its U.S. corn crop rating for a third straight week on Monday. The agency said 61% of the nation's corn crop was in good-to-excellent condition as of Sunday, down 2 points from a week earlier and below the average analyst estimate for no change in the week.
The USDA's soybean rating held steady in the latest week at 63% good to excellent. Analysts, on average, had expected a 1 point increase.
The USDA on Monday said U.S. soy processors crushed 217.8 million bushels of soybeans in June, the strongest crush on record for the sixth month of the year. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the crush at 218.3 million bushels.
