Verbund says it uses Siemens parts cited in US cyber threat alert
Verbund says it uses Siemens parts cited in US cyber threat alert Aug 20 (Reuters) - Austrian power producer Verbund VERB.VI said on Thursday it uses Siemens SIEGn.DE control-system components named in a U.S. government warning about an "active threat" from hackers, but has seen no related incidents.
An advisory from several U.S. government agencies published on Wednesday described an "active threat" posed by unidentified hackers to Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in U.S. critical infrastructure, including water facilities.
A Verbund spokesperson said the company uses Siemens S7 PLCs "in very specialized areas only".
"Unlike the cases in the U.S., these systems cannot be accessed or located from the internet," the spokesperson said.
The warning comes amid a series of cyber incidents targeting local water systems across multiple U.S. states that experts suspect are linked to Iran.
