WALL STREET INDEXES CHURN NEAR FLAT

U.S. equity indexes are sluggish on Thursday with the Dow .DJI dipping, the S&P 500 .SPX close to flat, and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC rising slightly, after mixed earnings reports.

With Middle East progress in question, oil prices are higher as investors wait for the outcome of Iran-Oman talks, while reports of attacks on Saudi tankers in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden renew supply concerns.

And while investors wait for the closely watched U.S. non-farm payrolls report, due out on Friday, there is little immediate reaction to the latest claims data. The number of Americans filing claims for unemployment benefits increased slightly last week, but layoffs dropped to a two-year low in July, consistent with a stable labor market, according to the latest Labor Department data.

On the earnings front, Datadog's DDOG.O forecast for slowing third-quarter revenue growth overshadowed its raised annual outlook, sending the high-flying stock down 15%. It is the biggest laggard in the S&P 500 technology index .SPLRCT.

Tech's next weakest performer is Western Digital WDC.O, which is down 11% after investors with lofty expectations were unimpressed with its forecast for quarterly revenue slightly above Wall Street estimates on strong AI-driven demand for its hard disk drives.

On the other side of the spectrum, shares of Ralph Lauren RL.N are up 5% and leading gainers in the consumer discretionary sector .SPLRCD after the high-end apparel company raised its annual revenue forecast.

And Parker-Hannifin Corp PH.N shares are jumping 9% after the motion and control technology company forecast annual profit above estimates on strong aerospace parts demand.

It is one of the top boosts for the S&P 500 behind high-profile technology companies such as Microsoft MSFT.O, Broadcom AVGO.O and Apple Inc AAPL.O.

Among the S&P 500's 11 major sectors, most are at least slightly red. Energy .SPNY is the top gainer with technology next. Real estate .SPLRCR is the biggest laggard.
