Markets & Macro

The burning macro question has been whether the Greek situation could presage a new era of sovereign risk.   Yves Smithasks whether the European banking system could survive a Greek Default.  Andrew Buttertakes a more robust view, suggesting that maybe it's time we kicked Greece out of the EU anyway and that it would be foolish to bet against  US Treasuries and an American recovery. 

In his podcast with Dominic Frisby, Robert Prechter speculates that the Dow could go to triple digits. Nils Jensen's If PIIGS Could Fly argues that it was naïve to believe that a crisis so profound would go away, however seductive the recovery may have been, while technical analyst, Robert Newgroshsees this retrenchment as just the end of the first phase of the bull market.

Oil & Gas Focus

EmptyEnd's M&A thread continues to be very active. The Oil Council has been debating whether junior oil companies are set to outperform in 2010 and whether 2010 would see the Return of the IOCs.  Oilguy reviews the state of the oil market and looks at 10 Geopolitical Forecasts likely to shape the oil market in 2010. 

The most discussed oil stocks on the site recently have been Soco International, Dana Petroleum and Encore Oil following their latest news. Elsewhere, 7Kiwi has assessed Roxi Petroleum's recent operational update, JPGHand Marben100write up Gulf Keystone Petroleum and Aminex respectively.

In terms of sector research, Edisonhas issued a detailed update on Nighthawk Energy, Fox Davies looks at the latest from Max Petroleum and Victoria Oil & Gas and Fat Prophetstakes a close look at oil giant, BP.

Focused on the North Sea, AbAngushas written an excellent piece on Stratic Energy Corp while there's been a lot of debate between top contributors Tournesoland Flying Horseover the merits of Xcite Energy. 

Gold, Uranium and the Miners

Australian uranium explorer, Marenica Energy, continues to be actively discussed.  On the Extract Complex thread, Marben100examines why Extract's share price performance has been poor despite some excellent results, M&A rumours and newsflow, while also assessing the latest December quarter figures from Australian coking coal producer, Caledon Resources. 

Amongst the gold miners, JPGHand Ohisayfocus in on Tajikstani gold miner, Kryso Resources, seemingly valued at just 10$ per resource ounce.  Griffin Mining saw increased Q4 output. P3dr036 highlighted the excellent quarterly performance from low-cost Philippino gold miner, Medusa Mining Ld, which beats its forecast production by 17% at 21,108 ozs.

Meanwhile, Edison have released recent research on two miners, Highland Gold Mining and Anglesey Mining, while Fox Davies has analysed Kazastani miner, Oxus Gold and Hambledon Mining.

In terms of upcoming sector events, it's worth noting Mining Journal's forthcoming Africa Day on March 19th where Avocet Mining will be presenting.

Anna Morrell provides an introduction to technical analysis and charting techniques. Economics commentator, Tim Priceanalyses the track record of Berkshire Hathaway and stresses the importance of patience in a bear market.

Snapping closely at his heels and hoping to overtake him by March 1st, though, are Ohisay and Alihaouas.
