Coverage and specialism: Dr James Fox joined the Stockopedia analyst bench in 2026 after more than a decade in writing, editorial and analytical roles, five of them analysing equities. Since 2022 he was one of two analysts behind The Motley Fool's UK share advisory service, writing research notes, investment briefings and earnings analysis for thousands of subscribers. His coverage has ranged from compute and AI infrastructure to industrial businesses with durable competitive advantages. Stockomendation, an independent tracker of analyst performance, once ranked him the UK's number one stock picker.

Background: James's route to markets ran through emerging-market finance and energy. He was a Senior Officer at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and an economics and business analyst at Asia Briefing before moving into equity research in 2022. He also works with Mercor as an economics expert, contributing to AI training and evaluation.

Qualifications: James holds a BA (Hons) in Russian and Politics from University College London and a PhD in Development Economics. His thesis examined local content in Uganda's oil industry and the effects of oil price swings and donor interventions.

How he invests: James's method is quantitative first. He looks for alignment across valuation, momentum, profitability and analyst revisions, then adds conviction: he concentrates on stocks he believes the market underappreciates, builds concentrated positions, buys into fear and rotates out of winners into lesser-known opportunities. His economics training shapes the thematic side, having spent years studying how commodity cycles and capital flows reshape whole industries.

And finally: Away from markets, James is the founder of Sumacqua, the world's first sumac-based drinks brand.
