Biography

Hello, I am Adrian Botham also known as the Shares Coach - a self-taught private investor with more than 27 years of experience in managing my own share portfolio.

A management consultant by profession, I am also the founder of the How To Invest In Shares blog, author of the "How To Invest In Shares" book and founder of SharesCoach.com, a provider of education products, training and coaching services for beginners to investing in shares.

Investing in stock market shares might sound complicated but I've learned that it doesn’t have to be that way and it’s certainly not as complicated as the Financial Services industry want us to believe! The Financial Services companies want us to think it is complicated so that we avoid making our own investment decisions and “leave it to the (so-called) experts” i.e. THEM, thus creating a dependency on THEM and paying THEM ever-growing amounts of money as our investments languish but their fees continue to grow.

There's nothing wrong with allowing the Financial Services companies to manage some of our money e.g. pension, bank savings and the like but I believe that those of us with the capability to do so should not rely on THEM exclusively. We should manage our investments ourselves so that we keep THEM on the straight and narrow and enjoy greater returns on our share portfolios by picking the shares and managing the portfolio ourselves. Stockopedia is a great tool for helping us to do this!

Investment strategy

I am a long-term investor as opposed to a day trader. I only invest in company shares, with a business-led approach and only invest in businesses that I understand. I adopt a number of different strategies to form sub-portfolios. These include high yield blue chips; solid mid cap growth companies; commodity shares e.g. oil & gas, gold, diamonds; and breakthrough technology companies (usually AIM shares) to add some excitement.
