Robert's Story

How did you pick investments before you used Stockopedia?

I started trading in 2005, trading Forex, Commodities & Stocks. Initially it was just Technical Analysis that I used to pick my investments. Then I started to read books on statistical analysis and started to apply some more maths and rigour to my charting.

Has using Stockopedia changed your approach to investing?

In one word - 'immensely'.

I can now get a real feel for the company I am looking to invest in using the StockReports. These are very easy to just glance through if I choose, but also allow me to scrutinise the details. They have all the up-to-date data, from key investing ratios to the financial summary. Stockopedia has all the data anyone can ever possibly need. What's even better is that the data is up to date which I believe is crucial.

I now have a much more rigorous approach to stock selection. I now use a number of quality, value and growth ratios, which I have picked up after studying the help guides and videos in your help guide section). I then use these in the Stockopedia screening tool for a particular economic sector. I then Z-score all the companies and look for stocks which I believe are underpriced. Once I have found a few good candidates, I glance through the Stockopedia stock report for any obvious concerns. What is great is that I can easily check for any discussions and analysis on a stock in the Stockopedia community - it felt good when a few of my stock picks using my method popped up on Ed Crofts NAPS picks for this year. Now I buy and hold with alerts set through Stockopedia notifications.

"Stockopedia has made me more relaxed and confident in my investing approach, so my quality of life is much better." - Robert

Has Stockopedia impacted your investment results or quality of life?

Yes, but not in the way you would think. I am making money, I believe maybe 15% over a two year period. My investments are small at the end of the day, but I get lots of enjoyment from this hobby and maybe one day I might be sitting on a beach living off my investment returns!

Years ago I used to try and chase profits in trading. All that brought me was stress, which leads to bad decision making. Stockopedia has made me more relaxed and confident in my investing approach, so my quality of life is much better.

What's your advice for investors that are just starting out?

Firstly - invest for enjoyment, not with a get-rich-quick plan. If you enjoy it you are much more likely to be successful.

Secondly, sign up for Stockopedia. Having this platform has made me so much more confident in my investment decisions. You can get a clear understanding of all the financial ratios, as well as access to company financials and a forum where you can read advice from experts and long term community members. For me the most important thing is that the data is all there, and all up-to-date.
