Mining operations in northern Chile continue despite heavy rains

- Major mining operations in northern Chile continued as usual on Wednesday despite the heavy rains that hit the northern part of the South American country.

  • President Jose Antonio Kast visited the northern region of Antofagasta on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by the heavy rainfall, which led to flooding and landslides.

  • “We are on the ground; the various ministers are working in their respective areas - primarily, as I mentioned, on connectivity, public health, education and social development - to gather information and target resources effectively. Resources are scarce,” Kast told reporters.

  • State-owned miner Codelco COBRE.UL and BHP BHP.AX - which runs the Escondida mine, the world's largest copper deposit - told Reuters that there were no changes in their operations.

  • Antofagasta Minerals ANTO.L added that it was “constantly monitoring weather conditions” to ensure the safety of its workers.
