MILAN, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Mediobanca MDBI.MI on Wednesday defended its decision to bring forward a shareholder vote on the proposed acquisition of Banca Generali BGN.MI, saying it was "very opportune" that shareholders pick the best strategic option.
Mediobanca has bid for Banca Generali after becoming a takeover target for state-backed Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI.
Facing a possible defeat, Mediobanca in June postponed at the last minute the shareholder vote on the Banca Generali deal. It had initially moved it to September 25, before bringing it forward to August 21.
