BioVie falls after long COVID drug fails to show benefit in overall trial
BUZZ-BioVie falls after long COVID drug fails to show benefit in overall trial ** Shares of drug developer BioVie BIVI.O fall 10.7% to $1.83 premarket
** Company says its experimental oral drug bezisterim did not reach statistical significance on any of the 22 measures in a mid-stage trial that enrolled 203 patients with long COVID
** Long COVID can cause symptoms that persist after the initial COVID-19 infection, including fatigue, difficulty thinking, sleep problems and worsening symptoms after physical or mental activity
** Results on 21 measures favored the drug, but significant benefits were limited to pre-specified groups with more severe fatigue, thinking problems or worsening symptoms after activity - BIVI
** Patients in these groups accounted for about 78% of trial participants; company says subgroup findings were exploratory and need confirmation in a larger late-stage trial
** Safety was similar to placebo, with no serious side effects reported among patients receiving bezisterim
** As of last close, BIVI up 76.7% YTD
