Canada Stocks: Toronto stocks near record high as investors weigh earnings, US PPI data
CANADA STOCKS-Toronto stocks near record high as investors weigh earnings, US PPI data By Sudeshna Ghoshal
August 13 (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index traded near a record high on Thursday as investors weighed corporate earnings and softer-than-expected U.S. PPI data.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index .GSPTSE was trading at 36,653.31 points by 10:15 a.m., after hitting an intraday record of 36,733.49 points earlier in the session.
Healthcare shares .GSPTTHC were among the biggest gainers, rising 1.4%, with Extendicare EXE.TO, Bausch Health BHC.TO and Sienna Senior Living SIA.TO leading gains on the main index.
Technology stocks .SPTTTK and consumer staples .GSPTTCS advanced 1.6% and 0.9%, respectively.
However, heavyweight miners .GSPTTMT traded lower as prices of gold and other precious metals slipped. Spot gold XAU= was down 0.7%, while silver XAG= shed 0.6%.
U.S. producer price inflation for July came in at 4.7%, while economists polled by Reuters had estimated 4.9%.
"Looks like some of the higher inflation numbers that the US was experiencing have come down a little bit... the markets are hoping that keeps the Fed on hold and they do not have to raise interest rates," said Allan Small, senior investment adviser of the Allan Small Financial Group with iA Private Wealth.
On the earnings front, investment firm Brookfield BN.TO posted a rise in second-quarter distributable earnings per share, though its shares were little changed.
Pan American Silver PAAS.TO was the biggest loser on the main index, shedding more than 9% after the miner missed quarterly adjusted profit estimates on lower gold output.
Engineering firm Stantec STN.TO beat second-quarter adjusted profit estimates late on Wednesday, but its shares were down 1.2%.
Meanwhile, CCL Industries CCLb.TO was up 1.9% after the specialty packaging company topped second-quarter sales estimates.
Separately, Canadian officials working to persuade Washington not to impose additional tariffs next week are unhappy with the latest U.S. offer to ease the measures, CBC News reported on Wednesday, citing two sources.
