Chubu Electric warns of record FY26 loss due to hefty charges
Chubu Electric warns of record FY26 loss due to hefty charges TOKYO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Chubu Electric Power 9502.T on Thursday warned of a record loss for fiscal 2026 after flagging a one-off charge of about 380 billion yen ($2.4 billion) related to its Hamaoka nuclear power station, citing uncertainty over the plant's future.
As a result, Chubu now expects a net loss of 215 billion yen for the year that ends in March, reversing its July estimate of a 160 billion yen net profit.
Here are some details:
In September, its president and chairman resigned after the utility falsified data to facilitate the plant's restart. The company also withdrew its application to bring two reactors back online
The extraordinary loss of about 380 billion yen includes an impairment loss on the plant and a valuation loss related to nuclear fuel
Chubu booked a record loss of 280 billion yen for the April-to-September first half, reflecting a special loss of about 370 billion yen related to the Hamaoka station
The utility expects additional and smaller losses related to the plant as it continues to spend money on safety maintenance, a company official said
Chubu plans to reapply to restart the reactors after restructuring its organisation and operational processes, but has no firm timeline for resubmitting the application, the official said
