The following factors could affect Italian markets on Wednesday.

(*) POLITICS
An Italian fighter jet deployed on a NATO mission shot down a drone in Lithuanian airspace on Tuesday that "most probably" came from Russia, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said on Tuesday.

ECONOMY
Cabinet expected to meet to approve an extension of a cut in excise duties on diesel beyond the current September 17 expiry date. (14:30 GMT).
ISTAT releases final August inflation data (08:00 GMT)

   COMPANIES  
   UNICREDIT CRDI.MI
   The Italian bank's chief Andrea Orcel does not want Bettina Orlopp to remain as Commerzbank CEO and is opposed to Berlin keeping two supervisory board seats, three people with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday, as UniCredit moves towards taking over the German bank.
   Orcel also wants Commerzbank Chairman Jens Weidmann to leave, two of the people said.
(*) Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp said on Tuesday that her bank was closely aligned with the German government in their positions on a potential UniCredit takeover.

   INTESA SANPAOLO ISP.MI, MONTE DEI PASCHI DI SIENA BMPS.MI
   Italy's competition authority said on Tuesday it had opened an investigation into the bid by Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's largest bank, to take over smaller peer Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

It is still premature to discuss the future of French insurer Axa's AXAF.PA joint venture with Monte dei Paschi, which expires in October 2027, and it is difficult to predict how the situation in Italy will evolve amid the ongoing banking sector consolidation, Axa CEO Thomas Buberl was quoted as saying by daily MF on Wednesday. The insurer wants to discuss the matter in the coming months and remains open to all possible solutions, he added.

WEBUILD WBD.MI, TREVI FINANZIARIA TFI.MI
Italy's market regulator Consob has approved the offer document for the Italian construction group's bid for smaller rival Trevi Finanziaria, Webuild said on Tuesday.

MFE-MEDIAFOREUROPE MFEB.MI
The Italian broadcaster presents half-year results, followed by conference call with analysts.

STELLANTIS STLAM.MI
(*) Berenberg said on Wednesday it had cut rating on Stellantis to 'hold' from 'buy' and the target price to €5.10 from €7.80.
The carmaker presents its new Lancia Gamma model to Italian Industry Minister Adolfo Urso.

(*) THE ITALIAN SEA GROUP TISGR.MI
The troubled yacht maker said on Tuesday it had received 11 non-binding offers for its assets, structured as either asset or share deals. Binding bids are expected by October 15, the company added.  
       
LUXURY
Italian luxury group Prada 1913.F is focused on reviving the Versace business, which it acquired last year, and is not considering a bid for rival Armani, Chief Executive Andrea Guerra told Reuters on Tuesday.

M&A
Infrastructure investors including DWS-backed Mediterra DataCenters, as well as CVC DIF CVC.AS and Macquarie MQG.AX, are among potential bidders for the data centre business of Italian telecoms and fibre operator Retelit, two sources close to the matter said on Tuesday.
