An Allianz-led consortium is close to winning a bid for Germany's largest life insurance administrator Viridium, being sold by financial investor Cinven in a 3.5 billion euros ($3.80 billion) deal expected to be finalised next week, two industry sources said on Thursday. Members of the consortium include Generali, which also holds a 10% stake in Viridium.

Banco BPM said on Thursday that Italian market regulator Consob had approved its buyout offer document for fund manager Anima, with the offer period running from March 17 to April 4.
Anima said on Thursday its board had deemed as adequate the price of 7 euros a share proposed by its leading investor Banco BPM to buy out other shareholders in Italy's biggest independent fund manager.

The European Central Bank has given UniCredit approval to buy up to 29.9% of Commerzbank CBKG.DE, the Italian bank said on Friday, potentially paving the way for CEO Andrea Orcel to pursue a takeover of Germany's second-biggest listed bank.

Italy's second-largest bank on Thursday said it had received European Central Bank authorisation to issue new shares, subject to shareholder approval, to finance its takeover bid for smaller rival Banco BPM.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to slap a 200% tariff on wine, cognac and other alcohol imports from Europe, opening a new front in a global trade war that has roiled financial markets and raised recession fears. Italy's biggest utility Enel said on Thursday its full-year ordinary core profit rose 4% versus 2023, driven by strong renewable power generation which more than compensated for a normalisation in the group's domestic retail business.
