POLITICS

Italy has installed Starlink antennas in four embassies around the world to test their functionality, but has not signed a national security contract with Elon Musk's company, a minister said on Thursday.

Foreign ministers of leading Western democracies sought to show a united front in Canada on Thursday after seven weeks of rising tensions between U.S. allies and President Donald Trump over his upending of foreign policy on Ukraine and imposing of tariffs.

The Italian government, which holds a 50% stake in the Franco-Italian chipmaker through CDP, is considering using its veto power to block board decisions, as Rome challenges the top management of the company, Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Friday.

GENERALI GASI.MI

An Allianz-led consortium is close to winning a bid for Germany's largest life insurance administrator Viridium, being sold by financial investor Cinven in a 3.5 billion euros ($3.80 billion) deal expected to be finalised next week, two industry sources said on Thursday. Members of the consortium include  Generali, which also holds a 10% stake in Viridium.

Banco BPM said on Thursday that Italian market regulator Consob had approved its buyout offer document for fund manager Anima, with the offer period running from March 17 to April 4.

Anima said on Thursday its board had deemed as adequate the price of 7 euros a share proposed by its leading investor Banco BPM to buy out other shareholders in Italy's biggest independent fund manager.

The European Central Bank has given UniCredit approval to buy up to 29.9% of Commerzbank CBKG.DE, the Italian bank said on Friday, potentially paving the way for CEO Andrea Orcel to pursue a takeover of Germany's second-biggest listed bank.

Italy's second-largest bank on Thursday said it had received European Central Bank authorisation to issue new shares, subject to shareholder approval, to finance its takeover bid for smaller rival Banco BPM.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to slap a 200% tariff on wine, cognac and other alcohol imports from Europe, opening a new front in a global trade war that has roiled financial markets and raised recession fears. On the back of the news, shares in Campari closed down 4.3% on Thursday.

Italy's biggest utility Enel said on Thursday its full-year ordinary core profit rose 4% versus 2023, driven by strong renewable power generation which more than compensated for a normalisation in the group's domestic retail business.

Italian prosecutors said on Thursday they had wrapped up their initial investigation of 12 people from Telecom Italia (TIM) and two content providers over alleged fraud through the unauthorised activation of services to customers.

Italy's largest construction company Webuild raised its financial targets for 2025 on Thursday after reporting 2024 revenue and core profit above guidance, which lifted its shares 7% to their highest since January 2018.

CUCINELLI BCU.MI

The Italian luxury group on Thursday said its operating profit had risen 12.9% last year and confirmed its expectations of sales growth of around 10% in 2025 and 2026.

FASHION

Donatella Versace is to step down as the main designer for the Versace brand after almost three decades, a move that has fanned talk of a sale of the business to rival Italian fashion house Prada 1913.F.
