GDANSK, May 15 (Reuters) - Polish food retail chain Dino DNP.WA reported a first-quarter net profit of 311.2 million zlotys ($81.91 million) on Thursday, up 5% year-on-year.
The result was above analysts' expectations of 286 million zlotys.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
Dino, one of Poland's largest supermarket chains, expanded its network by opening 58 new stores in the first quarter, marking a 45% growth compared to the same period last year.
As of May the company has reached a market capitalization of 54 billion zlotys.
BY THE NUMBERS
Dino's revenue increased by 10% year-on-year to 7.35 billion zlotys, driven by expansion of the company's store network. Earnings before interest, depreciation, and taxes (EBITDA) came in at 532.3 million zlotys.
The Like-for-like sales growth amounted to 0.5% in the first quarter, following an increase of 11.9% in the corresponding period last year.
The factors contributing to the decrease in LFL sales were the timing of the Easter holidays, and two fewer trading days in the first quarter.
CONTEXT
On Thursday, Eurocash EUR.WA, competing with Dino in Poland's retail sector, reported a 7.6% year-over-year decline in consolidated sales, attributing the drop to the country's economic downturn, reduced consumer purchasing power, and rising operational costs.
